What’s a PBX?
A telephone system within an enterprise that switches calls between enterprise users on local lines while allowing all users to share a certain number of external phone lines.
The smarts of your business phone system.
A PBX (Private Branch Exchange) is the brains behind your phones, and does 3 things.
Extensions, groups, and queues are created by the PBX. Handsets are assigned extensions, and calls between extensions are free.
Routing of incoming, outgoing, and internal calls is handled by the PBX, using a combination of business logic, caller selections, and operator actions.
The connection of your handsets to the world is managed by the PBX, via a SIP Trunk, letting you make calls to and receive calls from outside.
